Montreal Editorial Portrait Photographer

Stomp Records in Montreal

I’m a Brit, living just outside of Montreal since 2014.

I’m also an award-winning editorial portrait photographer with a cinematic edge to my portrait photography. My work has appeared in magazines as diverse as Rolling Stone, Metal Hammer and Professional Photographer and I’ve been accredited photographer for the likes of Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Metallica and the Global Gathering festival.

I work mainly on location, preferring environmental portraiture that adds more story-telling and context to an image, but I also offer simple headshots and close-up portraits.

I have photographed celebrities, actors, musicians, dancers, sports personalities, authors, comedians and many more, and always aim to capture something of the true personality of the people I meet.

My portraits are usually for editorial, promotional, or commercial purposes. The process starts with a brainstorming session in which we discuss and develop the concept, mood and location for the shoot, as well as any target audience for the final images.

Shooting editorial portraits is as much about getting your subject in the right frame of mind as it is framing the shot. Taking someone’s portrait has always been about getting something across about their character, rather than just a snapshot of how they look. I’m trying to tell something about these people so that the person viewing the final photograph can relate to them.

Taking portraits varies on a case-by-case basis. You might want eye contact in the photo, but on the other hand, you might not want your subject looking into the camera. You might want them against a studio white wall or with lots of contextual detail. I often shoot editorial portraits in a location that tells more of the subject’s story, whether that be their place of work, their home or even somewhere that seems completely the opposite of what you’d expect.
